こんにちは。トーマス・オットはあまり日本には居ないタイプの漫画家です。日本でこういうダークな作風というと、どうしてもアングラ、エログロナンセンスみたいな方向に行きがちですが、このトーマス・オットは調べてみるとどうやら映画を学んでいたらしく、その話は日本のテレビドラマ「世にも奇妙な物語」（1990）のような奇天烈で時にシュールな笑いがあって、どれも短編としての完成度が非常に高いです。これは推測ですが、「世にも奇妙な物語」というテレビドラマはアメリカの「ヒッチコック劇場」から影響を受けて制作されていて、映画を学んでいたトーマス・オットは当然アルフレッド・ヒッチコックを知っているでしょうし、またヒッチコックが得意としたサスペンスというジャンルは、このトーマス・オットにも同じことがいえます。スクラッチボードを使った黒を基調とした画風は特徴的ですが、今回読んでいてそれよりもやや俯瞰から対象物を見下ろした構図の、多面体の影の濃淡で立体感を生み出していることに気付きました。単純に絵が上手いですし、あとこれは最近思うことなのですが、例えば写真には解像度の高い写真というものがありますが、絵というものにはその解像度が存在しません。でもそれこそが究極の解像度という解釈も出来ます。意味不明ですが何というか結局人間の目が一番解像度が高いレンズだよな、とか最近考えていてそれが関係しています。前にも書いたかもしれませんが、こういう画風で作品を作り続けることは精神的に危険です。だからこそ多くはブラックジョーク的な方向に行くのだと思うのですが、暗い話ばかりを書いていると馬鹿みたいな話ですが、本当にそういう気持になることがあります。
