こんにちは。エドワード・ゴーリーは「ネバーエンディングナイトメア」（2014）というゲームのグラフィックがこのエドワード・ゴーリーの絵柄からインスパイアされて制作されたことから知りました。実は以前からamazonのホームに「うろんな客」（1957）が出ていて、恐らくショーン・タンとかトーマス・オットなどの絵本を買っていたからだと思いますが、その存在は知っていました。この「不幸な子供」（1961）の他にも「敬虔な幼子」（1965）と「おぞましい二人」（1977）も買いました。どの本にも言えることですがとても手早く読めます。多分五分くらいで読みました。「敬虔な幼子」は一見宮沢賢治のような尊い自己犠牲の話かと思いきや、随所に不可解な描写があって、単なる寓話ではありません。「おぞましい二人」は実際の事件を基に描いた作品で、淡々とした語りと、二人が犯罪に走るまでの生活の細かいディテールが気持ち悪さを増しています。ショーン・タンとかトーマス・オットとかにも言えることですが、外国の絵本作家の特徴というか、これは昔の作家の特徴なのかもしれませんが、同じ構図とか同じモチーフを反復することが作家性である、という感じがあります。むしろこんなに情報がある今の時代が異常なのだと思いますが、それこそ昔の時代は一つの映画を観るにも映画館に行ってお金を払って観ていた訳で、そこから受ける刺激は相当なものだったのだと想像出来ます。そしてその刺激を1週間なり一ヶ月なりもしくは一年くらい醸造させて、作品を作っていたのだと勝手に思っています。だからこそ一つのテーマに固執したような専門的な作家が沢山生まれたのだと、間違っているかも知れませんがそう思います。「不幸な子供」はレオンス・ペレの「パリの子供」（1913）を参考にして作られたそうです。この救いのない展開をある種救っているのはやはり客観主義とでもいうのか、ゴーリーの冷徹なまでの作品に対する距離感があります。絵はこの3冊の中でも一番描き込まれており、相当な熱量を持って制作されたことは明らかですが、それの照れ隠しとでもいうかの如き話です。面白いのは今の時代ならこういう作家はどんどんエスカレートしていきそうなものですが、やはりこれが描かれた1960年代くらいの時代の空気というか、ゴーリーにそれを抑制する克己心が特別あったのか、分かりませんがこの後もゴーリーはこの作風を維持し続けたことが凄いです。ショーン・タンはエドワード・ゴーリーの影響を如実に受けていると思います。
hello. I learned about Edward Gorey from the fact that the graphics of the game "Neverending Nightmare" (2014) were inspired by this Edward Gorey picture. To tell the truth, "Haunted Guest" (1957) has appeared on Amazon's home page for some time, probably because I bought picture books by Sean Tan and Thomas Ott, but I knew of its existence.In addition to this "Unfortunate Child" (1961), I also bought "A Pious Child" (1965) and "Abominable Two" (1977). At first glance, "A Pious Child" seems to be a story of noble self-sacrifice, like Kenji Miyazawa's, but there are inexplicable descriptions here and there, and it is not just a fable."The Horrifying Couple" is based on an actual incident, and the indifferent narration and fine details of the lives of the two leading up to their crimes add to the disgust. The same can be said for Sean Tan and Thomas Ott, but the characteristics of foreign picture book authors, or maybe this is a characteristic of older authors, is that the repetition of the same composition or the same motif is an artist's character. I have a feeling that it is.Rather, I think that the present age with so much information is abnormal, but in the old days, even if you wanted to see a single movie, you would have to go to the cinema and pay to watch it. I can imagine that it was worth it. And I think that I was making a work by letting that stimulus brew for a week, a month, or a year.I may be wrong, but I think that's why so many professional writers who stick to one theme were born. "Unfortunate Child" is based on Léonce Perret's "Children of Paris" (1913). It is the objectivity that somehow saves this hopeless development, and there is a sense of distance from Gorey's cold-blooded work.The illustrations are the most drawn out of the three books, and it is clear that they were produced with a considerable amount of passion, but this is a story that hides that embarrassment. What's interesting is that in this day and age, writers like this are likely to escalate more and more. It is amazing that Gorey continued to maintain this style even after this.I think Sean Tan is really influenced by Edward Gorey.

エドワード・ゴーリーの作家性について考えたのですが、やはり絵本という媒体の特性なのか、映画でいえばナレーションにあたるような、神の目線の言葉で物語が綴られることがその客観主義に拍車を掛けている気がします。ウィキペディアには言葉の韻について書かれていますが、原文が英語なので、その辺りはよくわかりません。「敬虔な幼子」はまだ心に引っ掛かるものがあります。宗教賛美に見せかけた批判のようにも読めますし、序文の3歳になったばかりで自らの邪心に気付いた、という書き出しも腑に落ちないところがあります。何故3歳にして気付いたのか、手に持ったトンカチや悪魔から何かを手渡されている描写などからも、この幼子は実は悪魔の子供なのではないか、という気もします。またニーチェやサルトルの神の不在または神は死んだ、という思想も関係している気がします。
I thought about Edward Gorey's authorship, but perhaps this is the characteristic of the medium of picture books, and his objectivism is spurred on by the fact that the story is told in the language of God's eyes, which is similar to the narration in a movie.
