こんにちは。パッケージがとても神秘的で、しかも数々の賞を獲ったらしいということからアットホームな映画なのかな、と思っていたら冒頭から主人公のイライザ（サリー・ホーキンス）の自慰行為があって驚きました。しかしこれには漠然とした意味があって、生命の起源である水の中で自慰行為をすること、それは初めてイライザが不思議な生きものと交流するときに茹で卵で仲良くなることからも、性に飢えている女性が男性（オス）に卵を渡すことは、セックスを暗示しているようにも感じます。この話は異類婚姻譚、という物語のジャンルに当てはまります。代表的なものとして「美女と野獣」のような異生物と人間の恋愛映画です。しかしこの映画の場合人間側が完璧ではなく、唖の女性になっています。言葉が使えないからこそ、言葉を使えない異生物と交流出来たのでしょうが、それだけではない何かがあります。撮影監督がダン・ローストセンという人らしいのですが、何となくスティーブン・スピルバーグの映画を担当しているヤヌス・カミンスキーに似ています。

他の方の感想を読んで知りましたが、この話がアンデルセンの童話「人魚姫」を下敷きにしているのは間違い無いと思います。終わり方は捉えようによってはアンハッピーエンドとも取れます。直前までイライザは一緒には行けない、といっていることからも魔界のものに魅入られた人間があちらの世界に引き込まれたようにも見えます。
