こんにちは。イギリスの「ガーディアン」という雑誌の特集で「永遠の名作映画」を批評家が決めました。そこで一位になったのが「チャイナタウン」です。ロマン・ポランスキーっぽくない映画だな、と思いました。他の方の感想を読みましたが、フィルム・ノワールの傑作、というのは分かるのですが、僕は正直微妙でした。でもまだ一度観ただけなのでもう一度見返したいです。
Hello. Critics have decided on an "eternal masterpiece" in a special feature of the British magazine "Guardian". "Chinatown" came in first. I thought it was a movie that didn't look like Roman Polanski. I read the impressions of other people, and I understand that it is a masterpiece of film noir, but I was honestly subtle. But I've only seen it once, so I want to look back again.

ジャック・ニコルソンの演技はスタンリー・キューブリックの「シャイニング」のような狂人のイメージがあったのですが、今作のような探偵も上手く演じています。ロマン・ポランスキーがカメオ出演しているのも面白かったです。「ゴッドファーザー」のロバート・エバンスが関わっていることもあり、映像が似ています。
Jack Nicholson's acting had the image of a madman like Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", but detectives like this one also play well. It was also interesting that Roman Polanski had a cameo appearance. The images are similar, partly because Robert Evans of "The Godfather" is involved.

また半年程経って観返しました。何というか、不思議な映画です。ノア・クロスという黒幕を演じたジョン・ヒューストンは、「マルタの鷹」（1941）などのフィルム・ノワールの巨匠で、その娘と当時主演のジャック・ニコルソンは恋愛関係にあり、「娘と寝たか」と聞くシーンは、そういう背景もあり意味深なシーンになっています。僕は二回目の鑑賞ですが、やはり話は難解で、僕の理解力の無さが原因かも知れませんが、ミステリーとしての完成度の高さは正直良くわかりません。この水の利権に関する話はどうやらアメリカの歴史的背景があるらしく、その辺を知っている人は楽しめるのでしょうか。しかし所々、はっとするようなアクションが散りばめられているので、飽きることなく観続けられます。他の方も書いていましたが、画に色調を抑えた上品な美しさがあります。ロマン・ポランスキーはこの頃映画監督を起用することに、なにか拘っていたのでしょうかね。「ローズマリーの赤ちゃん」（1968）でもジョン・カサヴェテスを起用していたりします。
I looked back after about half a year. It's a mysterious movie. John Huston, who played the black curtain Noah Kross, was a master of film noirs such as "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), and his daughter and Jack Nicholson, who starred at the time, were in a romantic relationship and said, "Did you sleep with your daughter?" The scene that I hear is a meaningful scene with such a background.This is my second appreciation, but the story is still difficult and may be due to my lack of understanding, but I honestly don't know how complete it is as a mystery. This story about water concessions seems to have an American historical background, and can anyone who knows about it enjoy it? However, there are some stunning actions scattered around, so you can keep watching without getting bored. As others have written, the picture has an elegant beauty with suppressed color tones. I wonder if Roman Polanski was obsessed with appointing a film director around this time. He also appointed John Cassavetes in "Rosemary's Baby" (1968).

ロマン・ポランスキーの作劇の特徴として、フィックスを重要な場面で使用して、基本カメラは動いていることがあります。何故この映画はこんなにも面白いのか、ジャック・ニコルソンの豊かな演技を観れるだけでなく、ロケーションの美しさと、簡潔なショットとスピーディーな展開、それだけで十分に傑作足り得るのだと思います。
A feature of Roman Polanski's dramatization is that the basic camera is in motion, using fixes at key moments. Why is this movie so interesting? Not only can you see Jack Nicholson's rich acting, but I think the beauty of the location, the simple shots and the speedy development alone are enough to make it a masterpiece.
